HAT
good are your Baptismal Promises if you don’t recognize the works of Satan and, instead of
renouncing them, eagerly consume them?
An exorcist once quipped in a lecture that we
shouldn’t panic about evil, because demons are not under every rock. Then he added, soberly,
“They’re under every other rock.” Still, he got it wrong. Demons are under every rock. And they are on top
of every rock. And they are on every sidewalk. And they are in every street. And they are in
every building. And they are in every home. And they are in every church. If we could see them,
the sky would be black with them. And most people are ignorant of it all.
Christ
was born over 2000 years ago to free “captive Israel” from the the works of Satan and the
darkness of evil and sin. Thus, in every moment now we should receive with reverent gratitude
this opening of a path to freedom from the dominion of Satan, and we can’t do this unless
we understand evil and sin in all their psychological and social manifestations—even in the Church
hierarchy—and fight constantly to stay on the path to salvation.
Therefore, let’s be real, let’s be simple, let’s
come back to where we need to be. A holy life is not a matter of
standards that only a few persons can attain. A holy life is a
matter of waking up from a spiritual stupor and realizing
that because of our ingratitude and complacency we have been
allowing demons to dupe us in their attempts to defile God’s love. A holy life is for everyone
who is brokenhearted by the damage sin inflicts on us and on the world around us. A holy
life is available to everyone who seeks it from the heart and cries out for
God’s mercy.
This is the only Daily Reflection needed for today,
tomorrow, and every day thereafter:
ord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy
on me.
